I can't believe tonight! I'm in my '88 GL on I-65 going north to Birmingham, heavy traffic doing 70 mph, in a frog strangling rainstorm, dark, hard to see, wipers at full speed, wind making the old volkswagen really wriggle her backside, and the phone rings. Can't answer, can't let go of the wheel. To much zigzag from wind, can't take my eyes off the road. Pause - wind lets up, called my son, " Was that you?" Says I. "Yeah, where are you?", he ask. "Crossing Valleydale" says I. "Be careful" says he. "There is a tornado reported right on top of you!" Thinks I "Theres no place to run, no place to hide - put the pedal to the metal, Boy, and pray. At this speed you will be out of the zone in two minutes!". Sure enough, in two minutes the rain slacked a bit, and the wind dropped off some. That pedal to the metal did the job, but I suspect that little prayer gave it some extra boot. I have to admit to enjoying myself somewhat. Barreling along (I too, was doing 70 mph, mainly to keep from being run over by big truckers) in a 28 year year old rear engine square antique brick unlike anything else on the road in a blinding storm was a bit exhilarating! Kinda like riding a motocross motorcycle on a steep mountain trail with deep steep dropoffs on either side, where you really hang it out over the edge!!! It was sort of a joy ride! John
