These are now reaching a point that the coils are breaking down and failing. Short the coil and say good bye to the control unit. Saw this twice last year. Test, test, test.

You want to find a used one!  VW shops often have them for sale, and folks who do conversions may have them.  Also check The Samba, they pop up there every once in a while.   I believe it was used on most VWs that had Digifant EFI in that era.
