Sorry, you are mistaken. The 82-85 watercooled vans don't have a rad fan relay in the main relay panel. They have the high speed relay mounted up high, right next to the coolant level warning relay in 83-85. 82 has no coolant level relay so the fan relay is up there all by itself. This is the same location that 86+ vans with 450 watt fan motors have it. All models with a relay up there use a relay of the same physical size but the relay for the 450 watt has a higher amp contact rating and .375" spades instead of the .250" spades of the relay for the smaller fan motor. 86+ with the smaller fan motor use the #5 position in the main relay panel for high speed. This same relay panel location is used for medium speed in 86+ with 450 watt fans and factory A/C. They use a 2 speed fan motor instead of the monster motor with the resistor for the lower speeds. The high speed relay is with the fuse rack. > > Dennis > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of vw_van_fan_Mark > Sent: Saturday, April 23, 2016 3:47 PM > To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM > Subject: Re: Cooling fan not coming on > > When you jumper high speed on the temp switch wiring you should hear a relay clicking behind the dash near the driver side headlight area. If you don't hear the relay then the motor isn't going to be getting power from the relay. > > Mark > >
