Happy Friday! 
Finally sick of my "sometimes they work, sometimes they don't" keys, I asked Steve if he could cut me some new ones. He asked for the key code off the door handle. I searched for a tutorial to remove the handle and found exactly what I needed on www.vanagonauts.com. Many thanks to all of you who post helpful information like this for those of us still learning about Vanagon maintenance. Have bookmarked the site and am sure to be using it again.
