I have a set of those new backing plates, 2 more on order for that rainy day.

Those are shims I see at lower shoe "anchors" ?

One thing I forgot to mention, and I'm sure I'm not the only one to do this,
but to remove the cable, I've used Vice Grips or large pliers to
grab the portion of cable that butts up against the backing plate. I'm
sure that part is designed to take some pressure
but how much?

Could an enthusiastic DIY type crush that portion enough to
hamper cable operation?
