I dealt with two vanagon auto trannies in the last few years.
one was exactly that, all fine but wouldn't go into top gear.
Nothing obvious in the pan or that could be seen by taking the Valve
Body off ...
Decided to stop there ..wasn't budget to go further anyway.
Needs a rebuilt in my opinion.

same on another ..was sorta working
high miles though .couldn't find anything not right looking inside ..
a nice Full Rebuild made that one very happy.  I like German Transaxle
for that.
