It's my understanding that the archives' search engine takes a loooong time to search all the years of posts. Don't know if there's anyway to speed up the process.
When you use google, are you first typing in; site:vanagon.com then the subject you are looking for?
Like this; site:vanagon.com wiper switch
Also try googling; the samba.com/vw/forum/
