That's it! Thanks, Dennis. Those are exactly the symptoms I experienced when I added a relay to protect the ST contacts in my ignition switch. Moving the wire back to the starter (a TDI starter for my Subaru conversion) fixed it. For the relay to energize the starter cannot be operated and the alternator must be charging. If you look at the relay you will see the blue wire from the alternator warning lamp. The warning lamp circuit is also needed to help get the alternator started. The Fridge relay loads the circuit down. So simply connecting that wire to ground may also make the alternator require additional speed to get it "activated". When adding a starter boost relay is important that this extra wire remains with the starter solenoid and not with the new relay coil. Failure to pay attention to this can result in the added relay remaining energized after releasing the key from start or even energizing unexpectedly while driving. Same goes for wiring for the brake warning light circuit and vehicles with cruise control. > >Dennis > > > >-----Original Message----- >From: Vanagon Mailing List [mailto:vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com] On Behalf Of email99@bellsouth.net >Sent: Wednesday, June 1, 2016 11:52 AM >To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >Subject: Starter solenoid wiring question - '86 AT > >I have a question about starter solenoid wiring on an '86 AT full >Westy.
