Subject:Puzzled by thesamba instructions: Convert 82D fan wiring to '86 fan.

Hi,

Today I pulled a radiator assembly off an '86 non-AC vanagon to install in my '82 Diesel. I have some questions on (1) Wiring the fan. (2) Making an upper mount.

1. Wiring the fan. I read the swap instruction on thesamaba:
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=297989

"Here's how to splice the new three prong temp sensor connector onto your existing wiring:
The wiring will require a voltmeter or test light. There should be 4
wires, 2 of a larger gauge and 2 of a smaller gauge.
With all 4 wires unplugged, test them each for voltage to chassis
ground. One of each pair will be live, so mark it.

The live wire of the smaller gauge is not needed so tape it off.
The other small wire should go to the red/blue of the new pigtail.
The large live wire should go to the red/white of the new pigtail.
The other large wire should go to the red/black of the new pigtail."

I cut the wiring at the firewall on the '86. I don't have the same colors as in thesamba post. Also I don;t understand how the rad is grounded with the above instructions.

My wires are: Brown, Red, Red/white, Red/blue.

Why are there four wires going to the fan assembly? Since I cut the wires at the firewall, before the thermoswitch I had expected 2 wires: positive and ground.

Anyone knows how to splice up the '86 wires Brown, Red, Red/white, Red/blue to the '82 wires: 2 thick red, 2 thin brownish.

2. I tried to break off the upper rad mount on the '86 donor, but the spotwelds held up very well and I couldn't get it off. Any suggestions for how to make an upper mount?

Thanks,
Martin
