My '87 2WD uses the N blank and that works on the ignition, all doors and the gas cap.

For the record, I am in possession of about eight 1993-2002 T3 (Vanagon in South Africa) Caravelle OEM fuel caps. They are the full cover style common on 2WD Vanagons and all use the 'N' profile ignition/door key profile.

I'm surmising that VW started using the Syncro cap toward the end of production of the Vanagon. Every one of the mentions of that fact have owned very late production Vanagons. Even the official VW manual on locks and keys says all 2 wheel drive use a separate key. It seems that even the factory didn't know what they did! I guess I should post the part numbers of the two caps and clarify it that way and not just Syncro and non. Two totally different caps that require completely different cylinders.
