Utah is the best. Blows my mind everytime I pass through. I highly recommend this place: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hovenweep_National_Monument It's a lost city of the Anasazi people. Not the biggest ruin (that would be Mesa Verde - or Chaco Canyon.) But Hovenweep is away from the crowds of trailers. It's the best kept secret. A bit hard to get to... my tom-tom sent me down a dirt road that took us far afield. Then the road was suddenly full of wild mustangs! All the locals say: Don't trust GPS out there. And they're right! Anyway, Hovenweep is right on the Utah/Colorado border. You'd get to it by turning off the 162 at Aneth, UT. Then you're on dirt roads. The campground at hovenweep is lovely ($12/night). Small, well organized. There's a really great visitor's center... and they actually let visitors walk around the ruins with dogs. You'd get to Hovenweep after the drive through Monument valley... You could arrive end-of-day. Might want to look into reservations. Me and my girlfriend ere enchanted by the Anasazi ruins.
