Thought I'd post a short note on my starting issue. I was on my way to Greg's home in Durham last Saturday morning when I decided to stop and hit an ATM (in Raleigh). I previously located Greg earlier and arranged to do an oil change in his driveway. Meanwhile, back at the ATM, the building was on a lot that was obviously new but I thought that the ATM would be working. Alas, it was not ready for business. I had turned off my motor and when I went to start I got nada.... So after a few futile efforts I thought it was probably the newer switch I had put in. So I dug my hi-tech jumper wire out of my little electronics bag and connected the starting solenoid directly to the battery and.... nothing... Hmmmm, well the starter does have 245K miles on it. Could it be dead? After making a phone call to Greg who directed me to Lonnie's University VW, I got out a screwdriver to short the battery directly and got..... nothing... Yes, I did the tapping with the heavy screwdriver to see if I could break it loose and...... nothing.... So that pretty much ruled out the switch and solenoid (maybe). So I got a hold of AAA and ended up flat-bedding it to Lonnie's where it's sitting waiting for a new starter. I can't complain though. I got great service from the original. The next one will not last probably more than a couple years but that's the way it is. I just want something in there that will last long enough for me to finish my project and then drive home. Big thanks to Greg in Durham and hopefully I'll be able to pass on the favor. Steven 91 Westy
