You might also try the under-engine tray expanding metal nuts from any
later model Jetta or New Beetle if you can find one. I can't check it out
just now but the look to be a) the same size as the grill fasteners and b)
somewhat adjustable because they are stamped metal and can be spread apart.
If all else fails let me know and I will dig out a couple of front grill
pieces and check them.
