Has anyone else possibly adjusted other engine components to
compensate (unknowingly) for the incorrect engine timing?

I know you want to set timing at 30º full advance but I've used the
tencentlife method to time my 2.1 for "full advance" at 40º

Stolen from the samba (this is with all sensors connected, engine warm):

"How do you know where 40 deg. is? Find the TDC and 5deg. marks on
your crankshaft pulley. The V-notch on the rim of the pulley
frontmost, closest to the engine case, is 5degrees Before Top Dead
Center (BTDC), which is where you set the idle timing if you use the
book procedure. The dished mark just to its left and on the next rim
back is TDC. Use a tape measure (a cloth sewing tape is best because
it's flexible [ I used a 2" piece of painters tape ] ), and make a
mark 2" clockwise (to the right) of the 5deg. V-notch. That is 40deg.
total advance. I use a cold chisel and make a permanent mark there,
which you can fill with paint, crayon or nail polish to make it easy
to spot under the strobe light. The reference mark is the case center
seam."
