There is a similar but smaller two-stage resistor mounted to the outside of
the rear blower case.  It has bare windings and spade terminals sticking
out.  I haven't studied this point but I presume it gets some airflow from
the blower intake.  Newer versions of this resistor have a thermal fuse
located above the second-stage resistor winding.  You could substitute your
front blower resistor but I would expect the resulting speeds to be higher
than the original, and you would still have to mount it with some attention
to ventilation.
