(Too many is the answer). I swear by them. There are some specialized batteries that fit and work well but put out a huge amount if power but you can buy an Optima at any Discount Auto, Autozone, etc. For about $200 on sale. They put out enough to turn over diesel trucks so I'm sure the Vanagon isn't stressing it. You will have to check with other Westy owners IF you have seats that pivot. Not sure on those clearance issues as everyone I own is damn tin-top. Good luck, TJ Has anyone used this battery <https://www.optimabatteries.com/en-us/yellowtop-deep-cycle-battery/d3478>? (*Optima YELLOWTOP=C2=AE D34/78)* I believe it fits under the driver seat perfectly if laid on its side. There is a huge difference in prices from retailer to retailer. Patti 90 Westy Automatic
