I got the Senior Pass on my 62nd birthday upon driving into Yosemite 2 years ago. Hands down one of the greatest things about turning 62! FREE admission into National Parks and Monuments, and 1/2 off camping fees on federal lands. Ha-ha!...recently camped in a place in Eastern Sierras....total bill for lovely camping was $2.50 a night with the senior pass. (Of course, there are ample places for free too, and I use them depending on the situation at the moment. Just so easy in a Vanagon.)
So, I'm always inclined to head for federal lands like National Forest campgrounds and BLM stuff and east of the Mississippi I totally love the Core of Engineers places like near some dam and lake. Man...in California....the State Parks are CRAZY expensive!! And don't even think about the beach campgrounds....about $35 to $50 a night depending how close you are to the water. And crowded and stinky and dirty and noisy. Take it from a local.

For those of you who have been told at federal facilities that they are out
of passes and you'll have to wait, the policy has evidently changed. They
will sell you the pass, issue a voucher which you may use as if it were the
pass, and send you the pass when they get more in stock.
This was reported today in the Spokane newspaper. The article also said
that some places have sold more passes in a month than they typically sell
in a year.
