borrow a 12V battery, or use a battery charger... connect it to the main battery cables (+ to + and - to -) using a jumper cable set. Disconnect the negative from the main battery without disturbing the jumper cable connected to it. Do your work. When done reconnect the negative of the main battery, remove the jumper. For future reference do this when you have disconnect the battery without losing the presets of anything on your van.
