I reckon it would, because the core would be only partially inserted.
Solenoids burn out if operated for long periods at other than fully closed
position.

Also this solenoid has a high-current coil that is engaged until the
solenoid almost completes its stroke; then the holding function is taken
over by a lighter coil.
