I only have my Bay Window to compare it to, but went through the same
thing.  We had to go back up front, loosening screws at the front and
pulling to the back each time.  I heard after the fact you should lock down
the front and back at the same time to make sure you don't end up with too
little on either end.  There are some good Youtube videos on Vanagon tent
install if you look.
