I once ran my Vw inline powered van about 40 miles with a rubber tire
chains tension rubber as the alternator/coolant pump belt.  Midnight
failure, near Kramer JCT in the desert nowhere.   I figured if I got to the
town of Mojave, I'd find an auto parts store...
   But I pulled into Trona for a nap, and at sunrise I discovered I'd
parked near a funky old shop saying "mechanic"...stuck my head inside,
someone answered...and it turns out they had a junker VW rabbit out back
with a belt on it..Drove on to Washington state, no problemo...
