I'm told if you catch it early enough you can correct the depth of
engagement and save the part.  I know the time it happened to me (VAG
rebuilt transmission with ~30k miles on it) I drove on it for quite a
while, and paid the local dealer $1200 around '95 for new r&p.  No further
trouble in 175k or so miles.
