Thanks Dennis.  Corrosion in a 30+ year old vehicle is always suspected so
I tried unplugging and replugging the connector several time while bathed
in contact cleaner but the blinking didn't change behavior.  This doesn't
rule out connector corrosion or intermittent bad ground but it suggests
the problem might be something else.  When I replaced the sensor it
immediately worked correctly...
