Dennis:
My leak is not the heater itself. It was the gasket on the valve and
the line from the engine compartment. My question was is there any
advantage to flushing the heater while I had things drained and apart or
should I just pre-emptively replace it?

With todays coolant even a marginally maintained system should not be loaded with enough debris to require cleaning or flushing.
