Thanks. It’s quite loose but it was working fine before so I’ll say it’s ok . Been doing some work on that shaft. I’ll post my work in a while. The contact Surface … to bearing, is good, curved, smoooth. Been fooling with the bushings on that cross shaft, as I said, I’ll post something about that in a bit > On Jun 13, 2021, at 3:00 PM, Dennis Haynes <d23haynes57@hotmail.com> wrote: > > If the fork can move it smoothly without it binding or jamming you should be good. Take a good look at the fork where it rests on the back of the bearing. If it is worn flat it probably should be replaced. Wear here could be a source of clutch chatter. > > Dennis > > > -----Original Message----- > From: Alistair Bell <albell@shaw.ca> > Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2021 5:57 PM > To: Dennis Haynes <d23haynes57@hotmail.com> > Cc: vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com > Subject: Re: Syncro trans input shaft guide sleeve > > Just a follow up, how close a fit is the release bearing on that sleeve? > > Alistair > >> On Jun 13, 2021, at 2:43 PM, Dennis Haynes <d23haynes57@hotmail.com> wrote: >> >> The metal and plastic versions are interchangeable. Often the plastic version has a metal reinforcement for the 3 bolt flange. To add to the confusion the release bearings now often have a nylon sleeve inside. That over the metal tube works best. The input shaft is supported by a splined coupling at the main shaft and the pilot bearing. In the bell housing there is the seal and a flanged oil slinger. The bell housing needs to be removed and it helps to drop the diff to service-check that coupling. There is a screw holding the shaft from falling out but the splined coupling sleeve is what transfers the power. The is a snap ring that holds the sleeve. There should be just a bit of play in the coupling to take angular misalignment for the input shaft. Hope this helps. >>> Dennis >>> -----Original Message----- >>> From: Vanagon Mailing List <vanagon@gerry.vanagon.com> On Behalf Of >>> Alistair Bell >>> Sent: Sunday, June 13, 2021 3:56 PM >>> To: vanagon@GERRY.VANAGON.COM >>> Subject: Syncro trans input shaft guide sleeve Hi, I’m a bit confused >>> :-) Bentley shows a two part assembly , metal guide sleeve and >>> plastic one.
