Will you do the work or a shop? "Better" subjective. What are your needs and priorities? This VW inline 4 conversion includes a brand new engine: http://www.foreignautosupply.com/engine-and-drive-train-programs/gen.v-turn-key-engine-conversion-program/ In 2007, my DIY conversion choices were between a Subaru 2.2 or VW gas or diesel inline conversion. My main priority was to find a known good lower mile engine. Local Subaru and VW TD donor cars were all high mile units. I stumbled upon a craigslist ad for good used VW engines from a reputable re seller and purchased a VW gas I4 from him. I don't know how many miles are on it but it's never had the head or oil pan off, doesn't smoke or leak coolant; it has only required normal maintenance. Neil.
