Thanks for sharing this Adam... I too saw that "helpful" article published by Van Café! Since these guys have an 84 Vanagon, with a 1.9l, they need to keep in mind that the Van Café solutions note: (Please note that although there are many similarities on the earlier model Vanagons, we are describing procedures for the 86 - 91 models) Having owned my 84 Westy since 87... and having both the 1.9l and 2.1l motors installed (not at the same time LOL!), I have found my 2.1l leaps and bounds more reliable than my 1.9l ever was. I had two possible related idle issues with my 1.9l, one was failure to re-start when hot (it would push start, but not crank start), later discovered this issue is often linked to valve adjustment. The idle issues I had, with a stall due to low idle, was something I often chased as well with my 1.9l, and many of the tips by Van Café were applied, with some success. Wishing Eric and Tom a successful and educational adventure... looking forward to discovering what resolution actually contributed the most!
