I have Koni shocks, stock springs, heavy sway bars front and rear, and 215/65 r 16 Michelin Defender tires on my '86 Westy w/2.5L Subaru and 350k miles. The Konis allow firm rebound with a softer jounce. I have the rebound adjusted just a bit softer than the beginning of "pump down". Handling is phenomenal. It's very comfortable while cornering is almost crisp. In the past 30 years I've had Boge, KYB, Bilstein and Koni shocks on the Vanagon and the Konis are by far the best. They currently have maybe 80K miles and I've adjusted them once since instillation setup. If they are adjusted too tight they will be rough ridding but when correct they are very smooth and comfortable with much more control than any of the others. Konis without a doubt are my choice. Ed
