I have a hand-held Fujitsu portable, quite small.  I don't use a Larsen
repeater antennae on the window, nor any other additional accessories. 
Usually run it off its own battery, which I recharge in the house, and
if THAT gets low, I can plug the adapter into the cigarette lighter.
