Andrew-  I have gone (and would again go) the way of the PVC pipe.  I threw
it in 4 or 5 years ago, and the heat's still great, no rust.  It only smells
bad for the first 2 or 3 days, less if you carefully clean out the shavings
from where you hacksawed it.
