How 'bout spearing that plastic with a hot something-or-other 
(red hot bicycle spoke?) that would melt into the 
plastic...let cool...twist and extract...? Since you've got 
the other half you could try a dry run to see how the plastic 
reacts to melting.

Just a thought!!
