My '87 suffered from this malady. I bought the dealer fix (025 906 302 A) 
from Camelback for $79.46, slapped it on in about 5 seconds and haven't had 
the problem since. I just returned from a 2500 mile road trip with lots of 
sustained freeway driving and she ran like a top.
