Sid,

Reading between the lines, it seems that you have a clutch problem, and not 
a transmission problem.  If you have the symptom (among others) of having 
to be stopped with the engine off to select a gear, that says that the 
clutch is dragging.  A new clutch doesn't mean a working clutch.
