Ken Lewis, thanks for the idea about looking for oil in the rubber boot that
connects the throttle body and the air flow sensor.  Yes, it's there, so we're
still sucking oil through the crankcase breather, even with the oil level at
the low mark on the dipstick.

Any ideas about why it would do that?
