As I understand it, the first layer of rubber on the tire is very soft and supple. This allows the tire to gain tremendous grip on snow and ice, however, at high speeds on normal pavement or heavy loads this layer of the tire wears out very quickly. So what you end up with is an expensive snow tire that works really well, but with a short life span as a snow tire. I have not used tires, this is just what I heard I bought Hakkapallika 10s by Nokia - the spelling is most likely incorrect - but I love these tires!
