I'd look at the new Passat, or the Jetta TDi. If he's a real friend, get him
outta that Celebrity, and into a VW. :)

Sound like the problem is related to heat, and possibly fuel. Without more
info, I'd also gander a guess at a clogged Catholic (catalytic) converter.
