Usually VW will at least pick up some of the tab for this work when your
mileage is under 100k miles.  That is what I have heard anyway.  Check out
Vanagon.com.  They have a whole article about the class action law suit
against VW about the head gasket issue.  I believe it is under the "problems"
section.
