Herr Piech met with numerous VW dealer managers in Florida last month
concerning pricing of the New Beetle. He suggested to the dealers to not
mark up the car. One of the reasons for selling the high volume/low profit
car is to bring people into the empty VW showrooms. Hopefully people will
notice the higher $$ cars such as the Passat, GLX's or new Eurovan(?) and
buy them. VWAG cannot (legally) control the price dealers want for their
cars. What VW should do however in high market areas with numerous dealers
is to pull the franchise license on the "less customer focused" dealers. VW
should then distribute the franchises more evenly geographically (like one
in west Texas). This would help the name brand. Supply and demand, aint it
great?
