Be sure it is a rod.  A friend of mine bought a Vanagon with a supposes rod
knock.  Turns out the exhaust was hitting up against an improperly installed
engine support bracket.  Make sure it's not the exhaust hitting up against
something first.  If it isn't, well, how do you feel about rebuilt motors?
