i just subscribed to this list and wanted to say hello to all of you. i
hope this is appropriate.

i'm new to your ranks; i bought an '87 Vanagon Syncro in november 1997.
my dad took out the middle seatbench, i put in a set of shelves and my
bike rack, and presto, my second home. i love it. i'm in love with my
van. it makes me happy.

now, for a question that screams, "i'm a newcomer!": would someone tell
me under what conditions i should use the L (low) gear?
