I bought these cup holders from K-mart for $1.99 each.  They had
metal brackets on the back which I bent and screwed into the
interior of the vents in on either side of the automatic
transmission.  Very stable and no visible holes.

There is a pretty good discussion on Vanagon.com about cup holders.
