Having never done it before, I removed the engine in my '81 in about four hours total, following the instructions in Bentley and Haynes. I supported the rear of the vehicle on jackstands, supported the tranny with a hydraulic jack and wood block, and used a floor jack and wood to lower the engine. The four hours was from starting to disconnect things until the engine was completely out, and I was working by myself. Although I had never removed a VW engine before, I did have a lot of experience working on other vehicles, including other engine removals, but the VW is pretty easy to work on.
