Sounds like you've maybe have a broken/cracked
3rd/4th gear hub assy. that we have discussed
before.  Your mechanic will not see anything from
outside the trans, of course, and will need to remove
and disassemble it.  If he is a VW mechanic worth
his salt he will already be aware of this problem area
on the 091 style gearboxes.  If he just stares at you
blankly when you mention this to him then I would
find another mechanic to work on your vehicle.
