When I had to replace an O2 sensor for a 84 vanagon and a 88 vanagon, I tried to use a o2 sensor socket. It broke in half.  I then tried a pipe wrench it just started to round the ends. I then bought a six-sided Craftsman boxed end wrench @$8(if it broke, I could get a new one free, do not remember the size now) and unpluged the sensor and ran the wire through the boxed end , put a cheater pipe on the end of the wrench and pushed with my feet and they came out easy.
