Sounds to me like you put the cat on backwards.  It should have an arrow on it
that shows the direction of the exhaust flow through it.  Just like a quote I
heard once:
A woman says to the preacher after a sermon, "Preacher you've rubbed the cat
the wrong way"
Preacher, "Turn the cat around!"
