Subject:Re: Need help re Cylinder Leak Test
From:Carter

With help from a long retired mechanic and his old Sun shop analyzer, we did
a compression test and a cylinder leak test on my 85 Westy 1.9 Dijijet with
133k original miles (no major engine work performed).

The compression looked good: 140-165-150-160 on cylinders 1234 respectively.
When we did a cylinder leak test, the results were 40%, 50%, 5%, 35% (same
cyl order). In all cases, the leak could be heard at the intake (air
cleaner removed) indicating burned intakes.

The question is whether the test itself is valid? The Sun manual refers only
to carburetor engines but not FI. The manual further states that anything
over 20% is BAD. Said mechanic opined that with the leak test results such
as these, I should have poor performance, if it ran at all. Notwithstanding,
a leak test is a leak test or is it?

The engine runs strong. No real complaints at all. Would anyone care to
comment on this matter?

TIA

Kit Carter, 85 Westy GL
