At only 177,000 miles on an 87 Synchro.

I live in southeastern Arizona. Local mechanics won't touch newer VW, and the three hour away Phoenix and Tucson official dealers are lying crooked incompetents.

What are my options?

A year or so back, somone posted the name of a superb Benson AZ VW mechanic here.
Anyone recall the thread?
