One easy, but not inexpensive way I've seen this accomplished is with
a Draftmaster rack.  This is a brand of rack that mounts in a hitch
reciever and then has a sort of
free-standing-vertical-roof-rack-turned on its end thing.  I don't
know contact info, but I see their ads frequently in cycling magazines.
