Actually, it has more to do with 'real' engines having the cylinders a
permanent part of the crankcase, as opposed to these motorcycle/aircraft
engines VW foisted on us ;)  (although a lot of those engines have flanges
at the base of the cylinders that're bolted to the crankcase - sure wish VW
 had done that).
