Kristen, It sounds like a stuck butterfly valve; although, my son just bought a '91 Vanagon GL and he had (I think) a similar problem. His problem turned out to be the air flow control was installed backwards. Not sure how your going to get this fixed by Sunday! Block it wiyh cardboard and good old Duct Tape. Have a good trip!
